Rafa celebrates the New Year!!

I am loving that Rafa has chosen to share this with us from his Facebook, where he's obviously not been drinking responsibly and he's shoving the grapes in his mouth at Midnight in the Middle East.

Priceless. :D

And this is Rafa with Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga enjoying (if that's the right word) ... Coldplay.

Hope someone puts these on YouTube ...

The Giggle Boys ...

Well Rafa is, anyway ...

This was a lovely moment from Rafa's match with Daveed yesterday. Well, not so for Daveed as Rafa hit him by accident in the warm up whilst practising the serve. A "thumbs up" came from Rafa - acknowledged by Daveed - but it didn't stop Rafa from laughing his head off at what he had done.

Sweet ...

Super shots ...

Real exhibition stuff from Rafa ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Well, here in the UK the hours are starting to slip away as the countdown to the New Year begins.

So wherever in the world you are, I wish you a very Happy New Year. May 2012 bring you peace and happiness ... and a sack-load of titles for Rafa.

FeliWatch ...

So what's our Feli been up to over this holiday season??

Well, he's working hard in the sunshine of Miami, getting himself ready for the 2012 season.

Rafa vs. Federer ... match highlights

Rafa ends 2011 with a victory ...

Well ... that was a bit better, wasn't it?

Rafa finishes the year with a straight sets victory over his old foe, Roger Federer by a 6-1, 7-5 scoreline. He did seem much improved on yesterday with his serve a bit more solid, and his backhand was firing quite nicely and a fair few winners were hit. However, I have to say that Federer's play was woeful. Mind you, him wearing his Rolex is a sure fire way of knowing that he wasn't taking it seriously. ;)

In his on-court interview Rafa seemed to be saying that he would be treating Doha as some more practice, but I hope the shoulder doesn't bother him too much.

So that's it ... its over. Munch on your grapes at Midnight, Rafa, (or whatever it is that Spaniards do), and we'll all be here to support you and wish you well in 2012.

VAMOS!!

Rafa vs. Ferrer - match highlights

Big year ahead for Rafa ...

Well obviously being a silly fangirl, the vagaries of the technicalities of tennis go right above my head, and don't hide it, but I think that one or two of you out there might suffer from the same ailment ... *cough*

Anyhow, I quite enjoyed this article by Patrick Mouratoglu who picks apart Rafa's 2011 game and suggests what he may look to improve for 2012. Lets all learn together readers!! :D

Quote of the day ...

... comes from Daveed.
“In PlayStation he is my rival. I think in PlayStation I am better. In tennis he’s better than me but in PlayStation, I am the Rafael Nadal!”

Rafa loses to Daveed ...

Well he's played better, hasn't he??

Rafa elected to receive and went 30-0 up but soon lost his way in the first set against David Ferrer as his tentative serving resulted in David racing to a 5-0 lead. Rafa then found a little bit of form to win 3 games, but David still ran out the first set winner by 6-3.

He then made a racy start to the second and went 4-0 up and although Rafa won a couple of games, David ran out the easy winner by 6-2 in the second. David will face him tomorrow as he brushed aside Feds by a 6-2, 6-1 scoreline, which means another Fedal meeting in the lucky losers spot.

Rafa had this to say ...
"I knew before coming here that I was not ready to win a match against David Ferrer, not to win a match against Djokovic or Federer. But I am ready to spend hours on court without risk of injury. That is the most important thing. I need this transition, hours of practice. If I am here, I will probably have a better feeling for Doha.
The positive thing is that I spent over an hour on court against a player who is playing with fantastic rhythm. I said before that I arrived without my best preparation, so the most important thing is that this match helped me improve. That's the perfect practice to keep improving a bit.
His (Ferrer's) level of legs, his movement was much better than mine today.
My shoulder is better, but the problem is when you have any injury with the shoulder, all the muscles around lose all the power.
I felt OK, not perfect but OK, but I need a little bit more power for everything. A little bit more confidence with the shoulder to hit the balls with enough power, to hurt the opponent. I need time for that. You always play a little bit scared of the injury and I need time to play without thinking about that."
A full article is here and some TVE footage of the match can be found here.

Rafa also admitted to playing with a slightly heavier racket which he said he was still adjusting to.

Rafa's day in Abu Dhabi ...

A mixed bag today for Rafa as he was taught some arabic writing with Feds before moving on to a Tennis Clinic with the children (who always bring a smile to his face).

Below is a short video clip of the event, although true to form for any Rafa fan worth their salt, the camera is firmly focussed on Rafa ... :D

Rafa managed to find some time to put in some practice today and thankfully, he did get round to eventually practising the serve. You may very well be interested in following @nidssserz on Twitter as she's bringing some detailed and exciting posts from the Mubadala World Tennis event. You can also find her here on Tumblr where she shares some of her pictures.

I'll be glad when he gets the sun on his face and some colour back in his skin ...

Here's a short video clip of Rafa practising today and oh, by the way ... he starts his campaign against David Ferrer tomorrow who took Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga out in 3 sets today. I much rather he plays Daveed than force himself un-necessarily against Tsonga which I'm sure he would be certain to do. Good luck Rafa!!

Rafa says "noh" to tennis in February ...

Now, I haven't exactly been enthused by Rafa taking part in this exho in Abu Dhabi when he and his team are happy to release details of how much he's been struggling with a shoulder injury. And when you are made aware (with the Nadal team as the source) that he's only practised his serve for one day since the Davis Cup final, you do curse the sense of it with a Grand Slam coming up.

However, it is with total surprise that I see how the media has seemingly twisted Rafa's words into him announcing he's taking February off in order to recover from this "nagging injury"??? Erm ... where exactly did he say that? Because try as I might, all I keep finding on the subject is this report (repeated almost word-for-word across all newspapers that are reporting the story) and all Rafa says about February is that he is using it to rest and practice.

It is, though, with some disappointment that I read a tweet from The Times journalist - Neil Harman - who's generally so good on reporting about Rafa in which he said ...
"Interesting early challenge to Drewett as new ATP chief. Nadal happily plays lucrative exo then says No to month of tour tennis."
I mean, whot??? Because if Mr Harman did his research, he would see that Rafa actually scheduled NO tennis for February 2011 either, although his AO injury masked that somewhat. And indeed, there was no tennis in 2010 (injury) and the last time he played in February was in 2009, WHERE HE GOT SOUNDLY CASTIGATED BY THE MEDIA FOR KEEPING TO HIS COMMITMENT AND TURNING UP IN ROTTERDAM JUST ONE WEEK AFTER ALL HIS EXERTIONS IN THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN.

So what is it to be, eh Media??

On Twitter, @adel1906 reports this from Rafa's presser ...
"I've had very good practice but for only 1 week. This is not enough. February will be my month to practice for the rest of the year."
See that? "February will be my month to practice ..." Because, fellow Rafafans as we all know, the start of Indian Wells through to Miami, the clay court season with the FO and Wimbledon and now this year, The Olympics, is Rafa's most important and best part of the season.

I mean, using a "for instance", well ... for instance what if Federer took a month off after the US Open to rest and practice for one of his best parts of the season, you know, indoor tennis on a hardcourt in places like Sweden, Basel, Paris, The World Tour Finals. Oh ... hang on a minute ...

Maybe you'd like to suggest to Mr Drewett - as the new ATP Chief - whether he would like to look into that one, eh Mr Harman?

I ask you ... they make my blood boil.

Are the nerves kicking in ?? ...

Mine are after watching that.

With the last of the Christmas turkey still in my fridge which will form my little dog's tea (again) tomorrow ... can you really believe that the first Slam is just around the corner??

Juntos por la integracion ...

Remember Rafa's work with his Foundation in Barcelona earlier this month? Well part of the events was a knock-out tennis tournament at the Barcelona Tennis Club and this is a short video of the proceedings.

Everything that touched us in 2011 ...

... and Rafa certainly did.

Rafa appears in Elle Espana in the above feature. Just gorgeous ...

He's on his way ...

A very sleepy and groggy looking Rafa caught an early plane to start his journey to Abu Dhabi this morning, and as is usual, IB3 were there to capture it.

I'm going for a little trip to Palma myself in February. Walking around Palma airport will be like greeting an old friend ...

Anyhow, David Nadal offered some translation of Rafa's words on Twitter ...
"I will return to Mallorca when my rivals from Australia to send me back here. I start the season a fair bit. In fact I expect nothing from Abu Dhabi display. Just serve training .... Let's see if I get better at Doha and well in Australia, which is what really matters. The shoulder is much improved this week. But after problems in the acromio clavicular muscles they have lost strength and they have not recovered to play at the highest level. It was unclear whether the trip to Abu Dabhi is a risk to Australia, but in the end I decided to go to Abu Dabhi and knock on wood"
Indeed, knock on wood. I hate to say this, but a $1M appearance fee and sponsor commitment might also have something to do with it. As much as I'm looking forward to seeing Rafa again, its not the Rafa of November I want to see. I would prefer him to work slowly towards Indian Wells and Miami with the big push starting in April - just as he said in his El Pais interview - rather than him persist in battling shoulder issues that have been plaguing him since his training after the Asian swing.

But I shall be cheering him on regardless ...

Tuesday 27 December 2011

Rafa's off to Abu Dhabi ...

With all the speculation surrounding Rafa's shoulder issues and whether or not he'd even go to Abu Dhabi, he did return to training yesterday with his partner being his old pal, Carlos Moya. Sadly for Charley, his wife has recently mis-carried, so I hope some time out with Rafa did him some good.

But the news today is that Rafa is definitely going to Abu Dhabi and that he travels tomorrow.

This what Rafa had to say about it on Facebook ...
"Practicing with Agustin Boje, Andoni Vivanco and Alex Andino at Manacor! Ready for Abu Dhabi, let's get started!"

That's a positive message, Rafa ... and what was even more positive was the sleeveless t-shirt and wonderful contours of the bicep, hehe. However, it isn't all good news.

I don't have the sources, but quotes accredited on Twitter suggest that Toni has said that Rafa's preparation has not been the best though. Its two matches at the most, I suppose, to add to the preparation at Doha. I guess I just worry about that "intensity" when he's not 100% fit.

All aboard the Rafarollercoaster!!!

FerWatch ...

So what's Fer been up to??

Well ... he's been taking part in a charity football match where various celebrities teamed up to play against bullfighters.

Nailing your colours to a mast, Fer.

"I've been too predictable a player ... "

Hey everybody.

I hope you all had a lovely time over Christmas and for those still on a break, enjoy yourselves.

It seems though that Rafa has been busy, and none more so by giving an interview to Juan Jose Mateo, which appeared in El Pais yesterday. Here's the link, and I'm afraid you'll have to put it through a mangle, but hopefully you'll be able to get more than a gist out of it.

I'll do a bit of para-phrasing here, but in summary, its another very honest, very open interview about how Rafa is feeling, his 2011 performance and what the immediate future has for him. Interestingly, one of the questions was about how self-critical Rafa is in public, and that Roger Federer never does it. No he doesn't, does he? *whistle*, but I do wonder sometimes why Rafa is so open, so revealing. And that's great when you're a fan because you get to know more about the complexities of the man than you do perhaps with Mr Perfect, and why would you let your opponents know so many of you deepest thoughts?

But that's just Rafa ... nothing fake. Straight from the soul, and yet another reason to add to the many why we support him.

But back to the interview. Rafa believes that you lose a bit of intensity over the years. That bit of self belief in keeping it going, keeping positive, that things will start to go well for you. He mentions the number of years he's been in the top two, that people talk often of all his injuries, and yet he doesn't believe he's had that many ... issues, yes, but not enough of a sustained nature that have made him drop from the top of the game. And whilst the injury discussions got wrapped up in the years at the top and intensity discussion, I do think it prophetic that he discusses his loss of intensity (remember the 100 years old statement at the French Open?), and we can't forget that he's been at the top of the game since 2005. Players like Federer and Djokovic made it there at 23/24, Rafa was No. 2 at aged 19, and he's had to maintain that intensity for a long time. And before others may cry, "well, Roger's had to do that too", with the Federer question, Rafa answered that Federer has completely different weapons than him, that for him, the intensity is less as he's become distinguished for his game, not his mental strength, but for Rafa its the opposite. Rafa is distinguished for his mental capability to overcome difficult situations, for his drive, his concentration, the intensity in his legs ... and its all that that has been lacking at certain moments this year.

Rafa is honest in saying that he's been too predictable, that he won too many matches in 2011 being dependable on his opponent, rather than depending on himself. Regarding the Djokovic factor, he's felt that in his matches, he's not gone that extra yard. He says that his first failure in Indian Wells was the key, because throughout that match, he felt that it all depended on him, like it was in his hands but then he started to play really badly (that dreadful 1st service percentage in the second set, if you recall), and he feels that winning that match would have taken away a lot of the anxiety with all the others. Miami was close, but surprisingly he says that the Rome match was the one that hurt most of all ... and it hurt him because he didn't take himself to his limit. When he says he did go to the limit - in that US Open final - he got a set back, he got to break points on Djokovic's serve at the start of the fourth. But what he regrets though, is that his hamstring got tired which is something he'd had to deal with after he got that very bad cramping in the presser after the Nalbandian match, and had it not done so, who knows? He knew though, that he had taken Djokovic to his limit in that match, that there was play where he had been dominating him when in so many of their other matches, it had been the other way around.

Interesting that when Rafa speaks of going to his level, Djokovic pulls a MTO after almost losing his own serve and before Rafa had to play his. Because its my belief that Djokovic's gamesmanship enters into matches like this one and the Rome semi-final in that he acts and looks to all intents and purposes like he's dying out there when he most certainly isn't. But what it buys him is players like Rafa and Murray who are playing at their absolute level, [so far] looking over and thinking that they perhaps can dip it a little because of the physical state of their opponent. Not correct, because its at that very point when a dip in their intensity helps Djokovic either to recover, or because of his better level of fitness now it means that he still, in fact, has reserves to draw on and he is helped because his opponents are lured into a false sense of thinking that they don't perhaps have to batter it at the same intensity. They should turn their back and not even look ... let's see for next season, huh?

And speaking of next season ... what does Rafa have to say about it? Well, he says its about playing inside the court more (erm, we all know that), but its about recovering the desire to give more of himself, to getting back to cruise level and then getting it at an even more higher level than that. He thinks he's been right to be self-critical, but not to take it to a point where he was on a downward spiral, although he admits that he kind of switched off after the US Open. He's not expecting it all to come back straight away in January, but he wants to have worked himself up to that position for IW/Miami and to kick on from April which including Wimbledon and the Olympics, is where he wants to be right back on top of his game.

So in conclusion, Rafa's loss of mojo has been evident since the clay court season if you ask me. He's explained that because of the years he's been playing at the levels he has, he perhaps lost some of his intensity; that the match in IW was his till his poor play overtook him and anxiety in subsequent matches got to him. His loss of intensity meant he didn't push himself to his limits in matches, but when he tried, he nearly got there. I just wonder too, that whilst Rafa was experiencing all that (notwithstanding the illnesses and accidents he dealt with which aren't mentioned) ... what of his personal life? I wonder exactly when his parents started making those tentative steps that they were getting back together? How did that all happen, and how much did Rafa know about it? When did it happen? Was he hopeful then nothing came of it, and then somehow it all did? I fail to see how all of that going on in the background (and perhaps a shift in his relationship with Toni), didn't fail to affect Rafa too, somewhat.

I dunno ... I think one hell of a lot has gone on personally, mentally, emotionally, physically and professionally this year, and that its the sum of all these parts that have affected Rafa at times. He's not starting 2012 in the very best of shape considering his shoulder issues, but in the Davis Cup final, at 1-6 down, a game down and 0-40 down on his own serve which he'd only held for one game in the course of the match, he drew on his intensity, his once famed self belief, and even with Del Potro making huge strides in the 4th set ... Rafa won.

A great interview, Rafa. Positive thoughts for 2012 ...

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!

I would just like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas - Joyeux Noel - Feliz Navidad - Happy Holidays - and most of all ... a BON NADAL!! Stay safe, and be happy ... I hope you and your families have a wonderful time.

Thank you very much for visiting my blog each day as its very much appreciated, and lets hope that when we next see Rafa - whether its this year or next - that we have a whole load more to VAMOS!! about.

Merry Christmas All !!

Love, Wooffie xxx

Tis the Season to ... keep practising

Rafa's still hard at it as IB3 have reported here. There's some nice victory coverage towards the end of the clip - particularly Australia '09 - and whilst he's says he'll be fine for the Australian Open, notably he hasn't yet decided whether or not he's going to Abu Dhabi. He's currently not practising his serve and will see how it goes on Monday.

Personally, Rafa ... stay away.

Disco Dancing Navidad Spaniards ...

OK ... I promise that this is my last, daft adventure into the silly, seasonal videos. But buoyed with their success of how we were all so impressed by the shapes they were throwing down at Antique, the Armada boys have got together to bring some joy to our holiday season as They've Got the [Disco] Moves like Jagger ...

Hope 2012 ...

... that's what this video is bringing to us. Some of Rafa's best shots of 2011 to show that its all still there.

Lets see it again next year, Rafa. Vamos!!

Bon Nadal !!!

Oh Lord! What have a I posted here???  I'm blaming the gin ...

FeliWatch ...

E stupido!!  LOL.  Feli tells it as it is ...

Merry Christmas from Team Cuteness ...

Rafa posted this from his Facebook ...
"All week long practicing with Marc Lopez, great moments :)"
And from the giggles on their faces and Toni's  it seems they've been having a good time.

Forgive me for not going back out there to bring the sources here (its Christmas, and I have my feet up, and I'm fighting the desire to pour myself a G&T ;) ), but I've been reading that Rafa has indeed had a shoulder issue, and that it forced him to take last week off from his training. However, he did re-commence again this week.

I'm sure we will see him in Abu Dhabi, but as for the effects ... who knows? I just hope for Rafa's sake that if he does have to face him again, that he quoshes the early attempt to get back inside his head, seeing as he's a late entrant to a tournament that he's never bothered entering before.

But until then ... have a HAPPY CHRISTMAS, Rafa!!

Feli'sJacketWatch ...

Now the other day, I posted something where Feli had written in a Book of Honour, and I'm putting two-and-two together, but I think it was all to do with this.

But ... the main reason for this post is not the link ... ITS BECAUSE HE'S WEARING THAT JACKET AGAIN!!!

Now again in a previous FeliWatch post, I made the tongue-in-cheek statement that following Feli'sScarfWatch (which has put in several stellar appearances), please don't say that I'm going to have to start a new topic of Feli'sJacketWatch ... but it seems I have to!!

Now here it is (avec le scarf) putting in its first appearance when Feli was amongst the Happy Dancing Spaniards at Antique nightclub following the Davis Cup victory.

And this is more a case of Feli probably never actually going to bed, hence, he's still wearing the same clothes when he arrives home in Madrid.

But then he turned up in it again at the Calzedonia event ... and the same outfit put in appearance at the Alcorcon presentation.

Stayed tuned to see where it might turn up next!  (And I sincerely hope he has a good dry cleaner ... ;) )

Injury woes ...

Have you been reading across the interweb that Rafa could potentially not appear in the Abu Dhabi? There's been a report in the printed La Marca that he's doubtful because of an issue with his shoulder. There's no direct link, so I can post anything, but there is a bit of chat around about it, and there's nothing else for it but to wait and see.

The obvious area where Rafa can work on to gain some improvement, is the serve. But is he physically not up for it for some reason? We saw the US Open serve only the once - at that tournie - and before the end of that year, he was ruled out of Paris because of it. It was also reported that he had issues with it (with a visit to the doctor) whilst he was back in training after the Asian swing, and is feeling the repetitive stress of over-training it again?

In addition, there's this [mangled] report that he had some treatment on his knees again on the 14th December ...
"Rafa Nadal goes through Vitoria to treat his battered knees
The USP La Esperanza clinic yesterday told an illustrious visitor. And is that the tennis world number two and recent winner of the Davis Cup, Rafael Nadal, spent yesterday revised its facilities to his battered knees. As you may recall, was the treatment designed by Dr. Mikel Sanchez allowed the Spaniard to his best last year after suffering an injury ordeal and pain in their joints".
Not a real surprise, as he had that injection to his knee during the DC weekend. If there is one wish I could bestow on Rafa for 2012, above all else ... its be healthy.

Hola! ...

Poor old Rafa ... he just can't escape the clutches of Julio Iglesias, can he? Here he is again, this time making the front cover of Hola! magazine.

But I am hooting with laughter at the airbrushing of Julio.

They've done their best to make him appear to be that "smooth" - *cough* - white toothed, "dashing" 45-year-old Lothario he obviously still thinks he is. *whistle*

You're creeping me out now, Julio ...

I mean ... if we had the chance to get close and personal to Rafa ... wouldn't we? But to be honest, I'm kind of surprised that Julio is 68. I thought him older ... and after he went in for the full-on snog when Rafa presented him with his award, he's still clinging on for dear life as they went out for dinner afterwards.

Or maybe have just forgot his zimmerframe. *shock* *naughty*

FeliWatch ...

A small, but fit picture of Feli at the Bilbao exho this weekend. This is what he had to say about it, courtesy of a mangle ...
"I leave the tournament with a good feeling," Simon has played the whole weekend very well. It's been a very difficult game for me. The public has been great, has attended the tournament on Friday and has encouraged me a lot. Thank you. It took me a good feeling here, it's a very nice tournament and already consolidated. I played here two years ago. A tournament is very comfortable for us and everything was perfect. And there has been a great level of players. I hope to return next year. The mayor seemed to be a very charismatic person. This type of tennis events about people and events like this help a lot."
And I'm liking this. Erm ... I don't really know what its about, but its something to do with winning the Davis Cup and Feli has written in the "Book of Honour". Fairly neat handwriting, Feli.

Picture of the Week ...

I just loved the pictures of Rafa and Xisca this week at his Foundation dinner, and this is my favourite. They both look happy and confident ... and just lovely.

FeliWatch ...

Feli was in the final today of the Spanish Masters in Bilbao, which is a bit of an exhibition event. He defeated Marcel Granollers and David Ferrer on his way, but sadly lost today to Gilles Simon, 6-4, 6-4. Don't ask me about Simon's hat. Cos I dunno ... other than it looks daft.

Earlier in the week, Feli caused me to have *child envy*.  Is it wrong to think evil, jealous thoughts towards a little girl?  Just asking ...

Rafa obviously staged his own version of El Clasico starring himself, friends and family.
