Rafa defeats Ferru ...

Rafa defeated his friend and fellow Spaniard - a determined David Ferrer - in a 7-6(5), 6-4 straights sets win to advance on to the quarter-finals. It was another topsy-turvy affair with Rafa edging out to a 3-1 start in the opener, only to be pegged back to 3-3 and another tie break ensued ... this time with Rafa winning although it was far from convincing. One break of serve was all he needed in the second, but he's through and he's still there fighting ... unlike Feds, Murray and Nole.

Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga is up next, against whom Rafa has a winning 4-1 head-to-head and has won their last 3 encounters. I can't stand this arrogant man who had one great result against Rafa and has pranced around the court pulling silly faces and performing victory dances on the back of it ever since. I hope Rafa smacks him ...

Elizabeth Kaye ...

About this time last year, a great article was produced by Elizabeth Kaye called "Zen and the Art of Rafael Nadal". Its attached under the 'Articles' feature on this blog.

Elizabeth was interviewed at this year's Indian Wells about her article and how much she loves Rafa as a tennis player and as a person. Here's the clip, and I think we should sign this woman up to be a Rafateer!!!

Big Dave Nalbandian ...

After Rafa disposed of Taylor Dent 6-4, 6-3 in his opening match, next up was old foe and Nemisis, David Nalbandian. I always cringe when Rafa has to play Nalby as although those two indoor pastings he took happened in 2007, for some reason, Nalby has the perfect flat hitting, hard court match up game for Rafa. Lets not forget the match points he held against him Indian Wells last year, so it was with trepidation that we awaited this match.

Sadly for Nalby but an advantage for Rafa, is that Nalby is returning after many months out due to hip surgery, therefore at some point, his fitness would have to come into play. The first set showed some tremendous tennis, especially from David and those recurring Rafa-doubts happened again in the middle of the first set. If Nalby had to have any chance, he had to win the first set, which he promptly did 10-8 in the first set tie-breaker, even with Rafa having a point to take the set himself.

Rafa struggled in his opening service game and had to fight his way out of it. As the match progressed, Rafa broke Nalby twice in the second set and twice in the third to run out the 6-2, 6-2 winner. This actually didn't accurately reflect the status of the match, but fitness and match practise is what Nalby is lacking at the moment, and it was a much needed victory for Rafa. Funnily in this match, it proved to be the reverse of what's been happening of late in that Rafa had to fight, keep his nerve and stay calm. Lets hope that this might be the turning point we are so dearly looking for

Rafa faces David Ferrer in his next match. Hope you've brought your running shoes, Rafa ...

The best thing so far about Miami ... the change of kit !!

Neo swears that checks are so 'on-trend' this season ... backed up by Marcus, our friend in New York.

Such sartorial savvy cannot reasonably be questioned ... so I acquiesce to say ... hmmm, I like it!!

Indian Wells catch up ...

Well ... due to becoming another year older and choosing to celebrate by taking a cottage in North Yorkshire where we were duly threatened by nesting swans and feral geese, I became a bit lax in my erst-while Rafa reporting. As I'm now beset with 'man-flu' ... read *suffering from a cold since the weekend but since management team are all out today at an away day I am having the day off*. Not solely to catch up, of course, but I need something to keep me occupied in my recuperation.

Sadly, Indian Wells - after starting with such vigour and wonderful play from Rafa - turned in another Rafa-crisis-of-confidence.

First up was a routine victory over Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-4. Then came a victory over the unlucky Marin Ancic, 6-2, 6-2. The man-mountain of John Isner was Rafa's next opponent, and although he was playing well and reading Isner's serve, all it took was one lapse of concentration on his own and the second set was lost. Rafa came out of it though as the 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 winner. On to the quarter-finals were he disposed of Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(4).

So as Rafa has been playing pretty well, I was filled with more than a modicum of hope that the final beckoned seeing as his semi-final opponent was the 31-year-old Ivan Ljubcic, who'd never won a masters 1000 series and the likes of Feds, Murray and Novak had all fallen by the wayside.

In what was a strange match, but is turning out to be a bit of a worrying pattern at the mo', Rafa raced ahead and was a superb first set winner at 6-3. He was still playing great in the second and on 2 occasions had 40-0 up on Looby's serve for breaks which he just could not put away. The match surprisingly turned at 4-4 in the second, as Rafa's nerves kicked in and the confidence was not there as he was broken, which led to Looby serving out for the second at 6-4.

Rafa's lack of confidence continued as he played a woeful first service game of the final set, and worries were abound as he was broken. However, he promptly broke back and the match ended up in a tie-breaker. Rafa then played what must have been THE most passive breaker ever, and he was easily take out by 7 points to 1.

So, a very disappointed Rafa was out after a week that showed such good promise. However, positives to take were that his fitness seemed fine. Surprisingly, that once famed mental strength and aggressive, positive attitude is the thing that is failing him now. However, whilst he proved to be match-tight, the semis is still a good result after time out. So as we keep saying Rafa ... Keep Colm and Carry On ...

Rafa wins his opener in Indian Wells ...

In our wee, small hours and not shown on dastardly Sky, our lovely Rafa came through his first round match with Rainer Schuettler with a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 scoreline.

He raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, but dropped one of his breaks when first serving out. He managed through and next faces the one who really had mono ... Mario Ancic.

Eat my shorts ...

They are just ... horrible.

But good to see you back, Rafa.

A quick flash of Rafatum ...

*screams* Rafa finally takes to the court tonight as he resumes his 2010 season in Indian Wells. Can't wait ... so let's have a quick flash of the Rafatum as a taster of things to come.

Good luck Rafa! And ... VAMOS !!!

The best job in the world ...

I've long held out for the belief that cutesie little Rafa Maymo has the absolute best job in the world. I mean ... not only does he get to press the Rafa-flesh, but he travels the world, constantly by Rafa's side and is never apart from him for a moment. Not even when Rafa is on holiday.

More evidence of this belief has come to pass in recent shots from Indian Wells. I mean ... check this out for a Maymo view ...

And even better, this time he gets to put his hand on it ...

But no. I've now found what has to be THE best job in the world. It was that bitch that got to spray Rafa's chest in the recent 'Gypsy' video ...

Hit for Haiti 2 ...

OK ... I know they raise loads of money, but I'm not really hot on all these 'charity' things. Anyhow, Feds' inception of Hit for Haiti first played out in Australia now makes its way to Indian Wells in version 2. But ... Rafa got to team up with Andre, whilst the snoz fest on the other side of the net featured Feds and Sampras. *Team Receivers* gets my vote!!

The most hilarious thing was that even in a charity match, Rafa kept the players waiting at the net ... whilst he changed his shirt!! AND (of course), it got one of the biggest cheers of the night. Phwoar Rafa ... looking good!!

Cool dude ...

Wow! Rafa looking h.o.t. whilst getting some night practise in.

Rafa IsSoFIT ...

Phwoar!!! The magazine feature season is shortly upon us and Rafa makes a start as the cover boy for SOBeFit magazine.

The link below takes us to a sneaky preview of its content - fitness, health, blah, blah, blah. Would it make me too much of a *fangirl* to say that I like it just for the pictures??

Gypsy ... for the trillioneth time

OK ... can we bear yet another post on this subject? Of course we can!!

This is the 'behind-the-scenes' making of the Gypsy video. Can you actually believe that there are jobs out there that require you to spray a hot man's chest with water to encourage droplets, AND where you get to rub dirt into a *swoon* muscley back? I hate that woman ... so jealous!!

By the way, I'm still too much of technophobe to be able to embed the video onto here, so here's a link ... !!!!!!!!!!!

Rafadirth ...

*sighs* ... God, this is sooooo boring. Absolutely NO Rafanews. Nothing. I'm scraping the barrel here, but if someone is thinking of where to go on their jolly holidays, here's Rafa sort of advertising the Balearic Islands, in his Duran Duran shirt and cheesy pose. (And I can't remember if I've linked this before).

*sighs ... again*
