Vive la Rafalution !!!

Well folks ... if it ain't packed by now, I'm going to have to do without it ...

I can barely believe it's here after looking forward to this trip for ages, but tomorrow morning I'm off to London to catch the train to Paris!! We've tickets for two days - which are Monday and Tuesday - and so there'll be a bit of nail-biting as we wait for the Order Of Play and we hope against hope that Rafa is on Chatrier.

Besides the tennis, I've a full Bossy Itinerary planned, and I'm looking forward to being in that magnificent city again as it's about ten years since I was last there.

But the pull of seeing Rafa play at Roland Garros is going to be one of greatest highlights of this crazy journey I've been on supporting him. I'm travelling with Rafan, but we'll be meeting up with plenty of other girls and some of Rafa's cheerleaders from Rome last week will also be there to carry on with their support. I am so excited ... I can't believe that I will actually see him play on the Chatrier court!!!  *unjinx*  I'm crossing everything that it will all go to plan, and I'm looking forward to wandering around that historic old Club, soaking up the atmosphere and taking in all that is the French Open.

I'm taking my laptop and I believe the hotel has WiFi, so I'll do my best to try and bring you snippets whilst I'm away. I can't promise, cos of course we're there to enjoy ourselves, but if I can manage it ... I will.

Flag and poms poms packed ... I'm ready to go ... to VAM8S Rafa!!!

Looking gorgeous ...

Roland Garros ... the draw

Well, you must have been living under a rock today if you haven't heard the draw by now. Of course the whole drama really centred around which half of the draw Rafa and the PoD would be in, and it turned out to be the same. So if they both get that far, it would be a semi-final match for them. More of that in a little bit.

So who else could be Rafa's possible opponents? Well, we know who will be up first, the German Daniel Brands. Never heard of him, but I've read that he's one of those Tall Players and seeing as that will be the match I hope to be seeing in Paris, we won't have a repeat of that John Isner heart stopper of the other year, Rafa ... do you hear?

After that it could be Fognini, Paire (again) or Nishikori, Stanford/Janovic/Gasquet in the quarters, the PoD in the semi and Smugly or Ferrer in the final.

Kindly old Uncle Feds has got the cakewalk of all cakewalk draws, and so what? He did in Rome last week and that didn't exactly do him any favours, did it? Besides, he could face Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga in the quarters, so that could be tricky. The PoD could get Dimitrov, but although he beat him in Madrid, I seriously don't expect the same over 5 sets when Grigor was cramping after 2. David might find his draw tricky, with Raonic, and Rolf. And a 0-14 H2H against Feds doesn't bode well.

But it will be "that" semi-final that everyone will be concentrating on. I'm not bothered that Rafa has to face him then because I figured that he'd have to go through him at some point to win. I don't feel there'll be as much pressure as in a final, and to be honest, if the worst possible thing happened (and UNJINX TO INFINITY AND BEYONDDDDDDD!!), I much prefer that Rafa wouldn't have to hang around on court to witness that thing holding the trophy. Plus, even beating Rafa means there's still one more player to negotiate.

No ... Rafa will be fine. The Masters this year have thrown up a number of shocks, so who's to say this Slam won't do the same?  However, it is hard to see past the top 3 at least getting there, but if anyone can, RAFA CAN!!

VAM8S and good luck, Rafa!! It will be a tense two weeks for us, but we're ready to be stapped into that RafaRollercoaster. Let's do this, Rafa. COME ON!!!

Hola todos .. soy Rafa ...

... you don't say? I didn't know who you were.

:D :D

Rafa is promoting some exhibition against David Nalbandian. Looking lovely ...

Quelitas ...

Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom, ... flick, miss, *snort*

Has the bubble burst ... ??

Well not ours ... obviously.  How could it, with Rafa reaching all 8 finals of the tournaments he entered, winning 6 of them, and 3 being Masters.  This European clay season, he's won Barcelona and the double header of Madrid and Rome and as Football Wooffs might say ... "It's all gone quiet over there ..."

So what am I talking about?

Well, exactly one month ago, the tennis world was in full frenzy because Novak Djokovic had just beaten Rafa to win Monte Carlo and according to the media at large, had thus become the heir apparent to the crown of Roland Garros.  My God ... they were all falling over themselves in anticipation.  Not only that, there was Guy Forget suggesting that the French Open Seeding Committee could perhaps change it's 100+ years' tradition in order to rank Rafa higher.  All for his benefit, of course, and in recognition of all he's achieved there.  *cough*

But never mind bubbles, what has come to pass thereafter I can better describe as a pin pricking a balloon, and slowly and surely, the air has all escaped and we're now left with a flat, rubbery mush.

Because the PoD (not the Prince Apparent), failed early in Madrid, and totally lost it against Rolf in Rome.  So what's he won in 2013 then?  From memory, is it The Australian Open and MC?  Hardly stellar form.  And his pedigree for beating Rafa in Paris?  Three victories in his entire career against him on clay and only one French Open final appearance.  Sure he beat Rafa in Monte Carlo ... but that was his first win over him on clay in 2 years.  Rafa's won 3 of their last 4 appearances on the surface, and contrary to popular belief in some quarters, the rain coming in last year's French Open final flattered Djokovic to win a set because he was being totally out-played otherwise.

Novak Djokovic has to be at his very best to beat Rafael Nadal.  And there's no doubt about it ... Rafa has to be at his very best to beat him too.  So who's closest to being it?  Djokovic has proved himself vulnerable and whilst Rafa has also, he somehow managed to get through his difficult matches.  But I think it was Rafa's form over the weekend at Rome that finally turned that metaphorically pricked media balloon into it's deflated mush.  Not only did he play exceptionally well, Rafa totally battered Federer in the final.  Words like "masterclass", "supremacy", "hammers", "routs", "blows away", "conquers", "dominates" and "crushes" were just a small example of the newspaper headlines used to described the manner of his victory.  And the general apathy and sombre mood it's created "out there" ever since, of a resignation that the French Open may still probably come Rafa's way, has felt like a wake.

Rafa was out-played in that first set in the Monte Carlo final.  He had some very good chances in the second set, but couldn't find the strength or stamina to consolidate the breaks he created after the exertion of doing so.  Turning those matches around against Ferrer in Madrid and Gulbis in Rome I felt were good for him.  He kicked on ... and his weekend play was just superb.  If I have a worry, it's that his conditioning has yet to be proven over 5 sets for this Rafa Mk III version; when Rafa Mk I and Rafa Mk II built their reputation upon it.

But it's still good thus far, and if anyone has a question mark hanging over him based on the clay season leading up to the Clay Slam ... it's not Rafa.

And oh ... the irony.  I always felt that tennis would find a funny way of evening itself out of the seeding conundrum for Paris. I say tennis, but the truth be told is that Rafa worked, earned and won his place as the new ATP #no.4 ... only for Murray to then withdraw, and he would have made it anyway.  But earning it feels all the more sweeter ...

The Champion of Rome in the Foro Italico ...

Some pictures ...

Yep. Some pictures ... they speak to me.  I don't like Roger Federer, I never have and I never will.

But I believe that Rafa does.  And there is something between these two guys whose folklore will last longer than perhaps even I'm watching tennis.  And they've wrote their own pages into the history books of world sport - never mind just tennis.

I don't need to enter into any diatribe about what I think about it all, because that's just me.  And that picture is them.  No ugly roaring, no ripping of shirts, no orchestrated, foul, ugly displays of nationalism ... just two men who've been protagonists during a very special period in men's tennis.

This picture touches me ... and who captured it?  Well, who else could capture a picture like that?  Clive Brunskill, of course.

Shine bright like a diamond ...

Rafa vs. Federer ... the Rome Masters final

Rafa continues to rule in Rome ...

What a perfect ending to a simply stunning display of tennis from Rafa this weekend.

Sometimes there are matches with a 6-1, 6-3 scoreline that on the surface seem routine, when they were anything but. And then sometimes there are 6-1, 6-3 scorelines that don't really reflect the utter annihilation of what happened out there on the tennis court. And today was one of the latter.

A simply magical, ethereal, imperious display of attacking and defensive clay court tennis. I have simply never been able to enjoy a match like that in years. And still he puts us through the wringer when serving for it at 5-1 ... just when we were getting too comfortable, he has to make our tummys knot a little. Naughty Rafa.

When I all but cried tears of relief when he managed to get through that match against Gulbis on Thursday - such was the stress of it all - and when I lost my rag over his poor second set performance against Ferrer, would I ever have expected any of the mastery Rafa displayed this weekend? No. Oh me of little faith. It's just that it was 8 years ago that Rafa won his first title in Rome. 8 years. And yet here he is still bringing it after all this time and a couple of serious knee related injuries - and that's why I get so annoyed when the knives are out when he exhibits anything less than an A+ performance on clay because you think, well how long do people seriously think he can go on producing the tennis and heart and desire he does after all this time?

But he does keep on doing it.

He made Roger Federer look all of his 31 years today, and showed him that he can't take 7 weeks out of the tour and then come back to trouble him on clay. It's looking less and less like a rivalry.

Eight finals, six titles, and he's played himself back to be No. 4 in the ATP rankings. He's No. 1 in The Race and less than 150 points behind No. 3. He's a bloody marvel.

Congratulations Rafa. We don't often see such a stunning display of tennis as we did today. Your shot making and play was the best we've seen in long while. "Don't Worry ... He is Nadal" - a phase that Francisco Roig used to Rafa's family when they were getting antsy during a match years ago. You've given us a weekend of tennis to savour Rafa. Thank you ... now on to Roland Garros!!

A bit of light relief ...

Rafa vs. Berdych ... the match

Stunning, simply stunning ...

Do you think Rafa reads my blog??

:D :D

After almost begging him to bring us a stress-free match, I never believed that it would be today against Rolf. Sure, he'd beat him what? 12 times in a row? But fresh from his great victory against the PoD yesterday (yep ... I'm still laughing at that), and the fact that Rolf actually does like playing on the clay, I don't think even he expected to be on the receiving end of what he got today.

Rafa was simply am-a-zing. Has he played any better on clay this year? Of course not. And maybe Rafa can't continuously bring that sort of performance for each and every match he plays these days, but it's really good to see it come out when it does. I was shouting "WOW" and applauding him in my own living room today. Rose covered her face with her paws ...

Rafa romped away with the first set 6-2, but the actual tennis actually made it look more like a hammering. Rafa's level dropped a little in the second, and @genny_ss reported that he'd felt his quadriceps a bit overloaded in the second, but Rafa broke at the right point at 4-5 in the second, and served it out for the victory. It was just a pity he couldn't have served an ace to win it, so good was that performance today.

The second semi-final is between Benoit Paire and Smugly tonight. Benoit is - of course - already being completely written off, and I doubt he will win ... so, we'll more than likely have it tomorrow. A Fedal final.

"Staff have just gulped for Me #Nadal" ... said @PseudoFed today. You don't say ...
