Rafa's daily dose ...

Rafa's Facebook message tonight reads ...
"Arrive at home and I received a packet! Do you like it?"
I don't want to start discussing Rafa's packet - *cough* - his new shoe, his knees ... but I love having a look at those Grand Slam trophies on that shelf over the dressing table.

Grand Slam trophies on a shelf over a dressing table in his bedroom at home. If that doesn't sum up Rafa, nothing does. And I only pray that those trophies can shove up a bit and make room for some new ones in the future.

Rafa's been to see his knee doctor with his father. I hope they had some good news ...

Rafa's daily dose ...

Today's Facebook entry from Rafa reads ...
"With friends at home!!"
Well actually, I can only see one friend. Help me out here. Is this guy called Joan? And I'm sure he was the guy that went with Rafa to the Vanity Fair awards and the match at the Bernabeu the other week. But then Rafa has so many close knit friends.

I know that like me, they were watching X-Factor at the judges houses ... *whistle*

Philosophical Locker Room Debates ...

LOOBY - Altruism, Rog. Altruism involves self-sacrifice in the interest of others, like what you do on the Players' Council. [cough]  Sadly, the ability for myself to be altruistic in the same forum was heinously denied me ... but I'll not dwell on that. I'm over it, and hardly ever mention it ... But whilst many people admire altruistic acts, few people are willing to sacrifice themselves completely. Shall we discuss the question of the proper balance between self-interest and altruism?

ROG - What was the first part of the question?

The Special Olympics ...

Rafa is one of the stars taking part in a publicity campaign for the "Special Olympics" which will be held in Barcelona, Vilanova and Geltru from 11th to 14th October.

The clip above shows Rafa's participation under the theme, "Sport makes us equal, special". The event is being held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Barcelona hosting the Games back in 1992 and of the first Special Olympics.

I don't know if Rafa will be making any sort of appearance but he's obviously happy to lend his name to the campaign itself.

Rafa's daily dose ...

Today's Facebook update is ...
"Waiting for my team!"
Haha!! You're probably late and they've gone without you, Rafa!!

And didn't anyone tell him he should tie his laces?  Because you know what a dork he is and is so prone to mishaps, more than likely the clot will go and trip up over them!!

*rolls eyes*

Philosophical Locker Room Debates ...

LOOBY - Hey Rog. Do you wonder whether creationism provides a valid explanation for the state of the known universe?

ROG - Yeah, I mean, it's unique in so many ways, you know.

Daily Dose ...

Let's get this weekend off to a good start, huh?

Oh Lord ...

Toni's appeared at a press conference. Was the whole of Palma invited??

He's not one to keep quiet, is he? And I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to anything he's got to say. I think we've had enough this week with Rafa's own interview - which caused enough scrutiny and debate as it was, with every word being picked over from Spanish to French, to English, to Italian. I don't know what his media event was about, but one thing's for sure ... he's going to receive question after question over Rafa. Time to leave it, Toni.

Rafa's daily dose ...

"Doing homework with my cousins."
You know that us ladies have just gone ga-ga and melted over this, don't you, Rafa??

I can't live ...

... with or without youuuu!!

The three amigos of Rafa and FeliFer are out celebrating after the 2009 Davis Cup win. I hope Rafa has since learnt how to sip and not glug his red wine at official dinners, and I think Feli has now learnt how to live without Fer quite well. ;)

But in those days, Feli was still singing his bromantic nonsense. Hehe ...

Rafa is to say a final "adios" to Juan Carlos ...

Juan Carlos Ferrero - the true and classy gentleman of tennis - announced recently that he is to retire from the game and that the Valencia Open will be his last tournament. All careers have to come to an end, but as JCF is one of my particular favourites, its still sad to hear the news.

Its probably fitting that the Valencia tournament will be his final one, as I think he's part owner of it, and of course his academy is based there,  I'm sure that both these things, along with his foundation work, will be keeping him occupied in the future.

As part of the celebrations of JCF's career, a number of personalities will be there to offer their tributes ... our Rafa being one of them. Other attendees will be Carlos Moya, Alex Corretja, Alberto Costa and Sergio Garcia. The line-up of players is also particularly good with Feli, Fer, Daveed, Nico, Marcel, Pico, David Nalbandian, JWT and Monfils ... to name a few.

I'm sure the Spanish boys will give him a big and very emotional send off. A Spanish article about it all is linked here.

Ummm ... does anybody fancy a bit of Winter sun in Valencia?? Just asking ...

Philosophical Locker Room Debates ...

LOOBY - Tell me, Rog. Is it true that if an infinite being is possible, it must exist?

ROG - Umm ... I'm feeling all right, so it's okay.

Rafa's daily dose ...

"Swimming in the pool"
You don't say, Rafa. ;)

I'm not Rafa ...

Whilst I really don't care for this PokerStars nonsense, this video is just adorable.

And Rafa ... you really do need to work on your Poker Face. But the best lines ...

"Do you play tennis?"

"... sometimes."

Hahaha ...

Daily Dose ...

I'm a bit behind on issuing out the doses ... and that's because I've been having one of my own.

Of food poisoning.

I know ... thank you for caring. I'm starting to get better and looking at doses of Rafa certainly helps. ;)

FeliWatch ...

So let me take you back to the Davis Cup semi-final victory of the other weekend ... and our Feli.

Feli may not be actually playing as part of the team now, but he seems to have assumed a role of chief compare ... and he certainly had a lot to say for himself at the on-court celebrations. Some of which seems to be taking the mickey out of Marc! and then offering a final few words to Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Speaking of whom ... JCF had the salubrious honour of also be sung to by Feli as he collected mementos and awards to mark the winding down of his career as he'll finally hang up his racquet after Valencia.

I'm not sure if JCF's tears are because of the moment ... or Feli's god-awful singing. :D :D

Early bird ...

Rafa's daily dose showed him glum faced this morning as he reported that he had to get up early for a flight ...
"Early in the airport ..."
I'm with you on that one, Rafa. Poor you. You hairgel doesn't mind getting up early though, does it???

It turns out that he was off to Madrid, to open some "Wild Wonders of Europe" exhibition in the park there.  Yes ... your guess is as good as mine!!

He did have a friend with him though ... ;)

Rafa in the Daily Mail ...

Ding, ding ... round 2!!

Next up on the interview trail is the Daily Mail. Just for information, Rafa met with journalists from l'Equipe, La Marca, Gazzetta Dello Sport and the Daily Mail who where all present together for the interviews you've seen today, the whole event being organised by Rafa's sponsor - PokerStars. Rafa spent 25 minutes with the journalists and ummm ... he was 20 minutes late!!

It is interesting to see the different spin that the Mail has used as compared with l'Equipe - much more inflammatory if you ask me. I mean, "King of pain Nadal in struggle to beat career threatening injury".

What a load of tosh.

Whenever has it ever been remotely suggested that Rafa's condition is career threatening? Good grief. Another anomaly is that the Mail is suggesting that Rafa isn't sure he'll even make it to Australia ...
"I hope you see me in Australia ... That is the biggest goal for me, to come back just before then in Qatar, but I cannot say for sure it is going to happen."
Whereas l'Equipe have a much more concise and to-the-point statement ...
"My goal is to begin the next season in perfect shape, in Doha and then, in the Australian Open."
No mention of him saying he can't be sure it is going to happen.  Journalistic licence, huh??  *rollseyes*

Henyways ... here's the article in full for you to read.

Just for the record, I have now read a full transcript of the l'Equipe interview on another site, and can report that @bluemathilde's tweets - even in the character limitations she was working - are more than a good reflection of what the interview reported.

Thanks again to her.

Rafa in l'Equipe ...

Rafa appears in l’Equipe today as he's given them an exclusive interview. Here’s a little taster …

The full article is not up on any website (and it may not be), so I’m not privy to any translation, however, @bluemathilde has done some sterling work over on Twitter, and has translated most of Rafa’s comments. You can read her tweets on her Twitter page, but for ease, I’ve also brought them over here.

Rafa gave the interview a few days ago in Madrid, and a lead-in is actually with regard to his contract with PokerStars. Inevitably he is asked about his injury progress and comeback, and the general message is that he swims almost 1 kilometer a day, but he isn’t practising any tennis yet. Equally, he still doesn't know when he'll be back.

About poker, Rafa says he likes it because you have to stay focussed, have a strategy, and you can have an influence on other players. He says he’s an aggressive player. He has a private Spanish coach, but he only actually plays with friends :)

Anyway, enough of that, this is what we want to read, so here are the soundbites to Rafa’s interview …

"I want to come back when I'll be completely healthy, it's clear for me. I don't want to play anymore with doubts on my physical condition.”

"Pain due to Hoffa’s syndrome started in Indian Wells, forced me to withdraw for the semi in Miami.”

“It was less painful on clay because of the surface. But from the semis in Roland Garros, my knee was very painful."

“I had to play the 2 last matches with drugs and injections. But I've never played as good on clay.”

“It was not a mistake to play in Halle, but maybe a mistake to try to play Wimbledon. My practicing sessions were awful.”

“I know that multiple injections in my knee are not good for my health, but it's tough not to try anything to play a GS.”

“I seem to be very calm with my health issues, but you have to know that I had tough moments. Not being able to carry my country’s flag in the Olympic Games was one of them. It made me sad for 2 weeks. Missing a GS is tough, but less because it's not only every 4 years.”

“My wish is to play in Rio, but it's in 4 years ...”

"I was taught to resist, to play with pain. Everybody is different, but any high level athlete has to play with pain."

In 2010 & 2011, I didn't play often with pain. After RG, it was even not a question to bear the pain, I was wondering on every shot if my knee will resist. I couldn't go on like that."

"Tennis is first of all technical, then physical, and mental when you play to the limits."

"People have been telling me for years to change my game. I run less, I don't run more than Federer or Djokovic when I face them. My game is my game, I try shorter points, but I won't change my style. I'll never "serve-volley", useless to wait for that, guys :) "

"I didn't have the same physical level in 2009 than in 2005. If you don't work on new shots, you lose. I've been at the top for 8 years."

"Before my injury, I was No 1 on the Race, I was strong. Why couldn't I come back as strong as before ? I'm not afraid of my body."

"I want to start the next season in perfect conditions : Doha, and then Australian Open."

"I can't decide to play less on hard courts, because there are 2 GS on hard courts. I'll try to play more on clay, but I even don't think that I have many options to do that. You know my opinion on hard courts. "

"Football, basketball are not played on hard courts. Business won’t. It's cheaper to build a hard court, than a good clay one."

"My ranking has lowered, but I'm not worried about it. I still love tennis with the same intensity, the same passion."

"Tennis is not business for me. The priority is the court, the game. Until RG, it was one of my best seasons, I loved how I played. I was feeling good, I thought that I could win any tournament.”

“The team was strong vs USA, I don't know if I'll be ready to compete for the final. I don't look further than tomorrow."

"The captain makes the decision, it's the team above all. I'm not sure I’m the best player for the final in 2 months."

"I'm very happy for Andy and not surprised at all. I know for many years that something great would happen to him. Good for UK too."

"I'm very ok on the new "no let rule". But every country has to apply the sane tension to all the nets."

"Ah ah. I was not aware of the new time violation rules, they didn't call me. Maybe they don't wish to (laughing)."

In summary, Mathilde writes that the journalist said that he interviewed a calm, smiley and motivated Rafa, but at no time did he mention that he could be back on court this year. The conclusion is : he doesn't know when he'll be back, but when he is ... he'll be back as strong as before.

Since the DC rumours were gathering so much pace since the weekend, I’m glad we’ve had the affirmation from this interview. I really don’t know how many times Rafa has to say it … he doesn’t know when he’ll  be back and he only will be when he’s good and ready. Please, let’s leave it at that.

Many, many thanks to Mathilde for the hard work in translating this and putting it out for all to read on Twitter … Great job!

Daily Dose ...

:( Its getting lonely here on this little old blog.

I foresee a bit of a slow week this week, as Personality awards and football matches aren't on the agenda. I hope Rafa continues to provide his provocative Facebook pictures and the Usual Suspects (you know who you are ;) ) respond appropriately on Twitter. Not that I ever join in, mind.  *cough*

Yesterday's rumour was that Rafa would return for the Davis Cup. Today's rumour is that he'll partner Marc! Lopez in the doubles of the Davis Cup. We know the score really ... he'll be ready when he's ready and not before.

Ivan Ljubicic is continuing to take a swipe at Rafa even from retirement. Why do you do it, Looby? You have your philosopical and intellectual debates with your chummy pals Rog and Novak, don't you? *whistle* Why do you even have to bother your esteemed thought over Rafa, other than perhaps apportioning your considered blame at his door because you didn't get elected to the Players' Council.  That's just my opinion, mind, cos I didn't know Rafa's influence went that deep. I mean if it did, we'd be having 2 year protected rankings and a Tour of a length that actually gave these players a chance. You didn't get elected to the Players' Council, Looby, because, umm ... they didn't want you?? Just a random thought. One of my friends said to me once that Looby and his ridiculous headband reminded her of when a baby's head engaged.

Just thought I'd share that one with you ...

And I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of Rog and Loob's "Intellectual Locker Room Debates". Would this be so wide of the mark?? ...

LOOBS - Tell me Roger. What's your view on the State financing of political parties?

ROG - Ummm ... well, you know ... it's a pity.
Do you get my drift? I may even make a feature out of it  ...

I did say it was slow news this week.

Rafa's daily dose ...

After Rafa's, ummm ... "angled" shot yesterday, here's something a bit more restrained ...
"Resting after a good physical practice!"
He's still got a cheeky look on his face if you ask me.  ;)

Daily Dose ...

Seeing as Rafa started off the "Dose" theme with Australian Open towels ...

Rafa's daily dose ...

Lying on a towel that he'd so obviously "feefed" from the Australian Open, Rafa today gave us his latest Facebook daily dose ...
"Working out with my physio at the gym."
There doesn't seem to be much work going on and ummm, Maymo ... if this picture is by you ... check your angles!!!!!!!!

Doctor's orders ...

Rafa cleared a little something up today on Facebook ...
"Practicing the only sport that I can play according with the doctors :) Who wouldn’t here?"
Seeing as he plays off something like a 3 handicap and yet was about 17 over par in the pro-am he played recently ... umm Rafa, you need a bit more practice.  ;)

Practicing golf but not tennis ... no bother, Rafa.  Take your time.

FeliWatch ...

Today was a special day for Feli. His 31st birthday. Happy Birthday, Feli ... I hope you've had a good one.

He seems to have been quite touched by the messages and best wishes he received on Twitter ...

And then came this ... a lovely bit of bromance. *sniff*

Rafa tweeted to say ...
"Today is the birthday of one of my best friends. Congratulations to Feliciano Lopez."
And Feli reciprocated with ...
"My best present would be to see you playing again."
*blowsnose*

There seems to be quite a bit of cake proffered to Feli today. I bet Judy Murray wishes she was there to help him eat it too ... ;)

GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!

Every picture tells a story, eh?  Rafa - animated as ever - was trying his best NOT to bring the jinx back to Real Madrid as he went to the Champions' League match on Tuesday night as they played ... *spit* Manchester City.  It was a great match ... and let's see if some captions might explain how the game panned out ... ;)

"... I'll have to run. My mother is expecting me to eat, and she's gonna kill me ..."

Oh ... don't ever change, Rafa. You're priceless.

Remember earlier in the week there was the launch of Rafa in October's edition of Vanity Fair? Well, over on NadalNews, @genny_ss and @gandaines have done a translation of the interview.

You can find the link here.

I hope Rafa did get too scolded off his mother for being late for dinner. :D

FeliWatch ...

Feli's in Vietnam!!

This is what he had to say on Facebook ...
"Incredible welcome in Vietnam (Ho Chi Min) ... Tomorrow I am playing an exhibition match here! What a chaotic city ..."
Feli is playing the exhibition with Gilles Simon, Victoria Azarenka and Dominika Chibulkova, in singles and doubles.

Now no fighting girls, to partner Feli. ;)  And I've no idea if the ladies will be paid the same as the guys.  Gilles Simon might have something to say about that.  *cough*

Its very nice the Feli was greeted with some lovely flowers. And very funny that he took his glasses off to have his picture taken. Hehe ...

Ambassadors and Kings ...

... Rafa meets them all.

Here's what Rafa said on his Facebook after he met with the American ambassador ...
"Yesterday I was received by the American ambassador to Spain in Madrid and his wife who treated us very warmly. I wanted to thank them and all the people they represent. Many thanks for the flag they offered me with!"
With Rafa's experience, does a diplomatic future await?? ;)

Daily Dose ...

Teasing the hair gel from those tresses ...

Hello everybody, guys ...

Hehe ... this picture made me chuckle from the football last night. Rafa embarrassed whilst acknowledging the crowd, who must have made some noise over him being in the house ...
