What's eating Rafael Nadal???

To be honest, I've been thinking that for a very long while now. And I'm not the only one it seems.

It was with some despondency that I read some of Rafa's quotes last week, particularly this one ...
"... because probably I was little bit less passion for the game probably because I was a little bit more tired than usual."
Its tough to hear someone you've admired for years speaking about their loss of passion, because that's one of the very things that I've always admired Rafa for. But it seems his words have had some resonance and in Spain this week, he's been playing it down by saying ...
"This has been a tough season for me. I'm not lacking passion. What I'm suffering is weariness from many years of playing at this level, week after week."
So what's the truth? Probably a bit of both, but check out this link that also discusses the subject. Well, I say discusses, but if I'm being honest, a lot of it is repeating what Rafa said in that press conference. Something you see time and again, but that's Rafa ... he speaks from the heart in those things, he's always honest and his sentences do read like an interview.

So what do I think? Well ... firstly, forgive me, but references about other people in mundane jobs who have to lift themselves, well ... its not apples with apples, is it? We're talking about an elite sportsman here. Someone who has a will and a drive (normally) that I can only dream about, and that's why we admire them so much. This abject desire to be the best, the dedication, to fine tune themselves to be at an absolute peak at the right time to be in the "perfect conditions" that Rafa speaks often about. But with that, there has to be some joy ... some raison d'etre for doing it, and that's the singular most upsetting thing for me this year ... to see the joy lacking from Rafa and his game.

I think it became prevalent from the start of the clay court season. Rafa was winning, but he just wasn't "on". That joy I'm talking about just wasn't there, and as the clay season progressed, it just seemed to get worse; from mediocre wins to painful losses and a first week in the French Open that had us worried for our lives and with Rafa speaking as if he felt 100 years old. So where did it all start?

This may be off the wall, but isn't being a sports star a little bit like being manic?? What I mean is that for the top guys you can go from the absolute highs to the absolute lows in a matter of a week. We can't imagine what that high must feel like of winning a major trophy like a Slam. All that work, all that preparation, 7 matches over a sustained period of 2 weeks playing over 5 sets. And then to win at the end of it ... wow, it must be unbelievable. But then the next time round, you may lose, and then its dealing with abject disappointment. But as Rafa says, the "looses" make the wins feel better. But then how do you cope when you're building yourself up to go for a Grand Slam, and then your body lets you down and you lose? And when you come back and throw the kitchen sink at your opponent (particularly in Miami), to then lose in a TB by a fraction of points, how do you handle it?

And you take this loss in your head to the next matches, and then when you find yourself losing again ... more manic lows. But the French Open reminded him what it was like to win again, but what a painful low to get there. Followed by another low and another one and then you feel you've played the best set of tennis in ages, to then lose the match and by a bagel in the final set. Time to take a break.

I don't blame him if he has lost his passion. I don't think he's been helped by coaching that seems stale and devoid of ideas. And I'm not sure where that passion may be ignited again. The Davis Cup will help him. At least we've seen smiley Rafa back again once he's surrounded by his mates, and that includes the Argentinian team, but I still think it will take more than this.

I will go back to that old saying that form is temporary, but class is permanent. And it gets trotted out so much because frankly ... its true. Maybe Rafa needs all things to just fall into place like what has happened to Feds lately. Just something somewhere to give him that confidence back which then shows in his tennis. I think it will take more than winning in the Davis Cup because he was totally awesome in the semi-final, but it didn't turn out to be the kick-start he needed. It may take quite some time, but at least he has less pressure this year in the Australian Open as he's neither the defending champion, nor is he going for a historic Slam, and he's defending only a quarter final. We'll see. That's why we all keep watching tennis, and that's why we love watching Rafa.

So what is eating Rafael Nadal?? Whatever it is, lets hope a manic win does it for him.

VAMOS!!

Just look at that beautiful face ... and the mop-head haircut ... *WAILS* Why Feli?? Why???

More Rafa practice ...

Rafa's certainly working up a sweat with Alberto Costa in training.

So much so that he had to take his shirt off. Shame ... but he seemed heppy for that.

Whoops!! There he goes again ...

Naughty Feli!!

Harumphh!

The Spanish boys have no respect for classic mid-20th Century designer furniture!!

Remember the picture of Rafa in his Monte Carlo hotel room abusing a Barcelona Chair by throwing clothes all over it?? Well, look how these guys are now trashing another iconic piece of furniture in the Isamu Noguchi Tribeca coffee table!! *blinks hard*

Papers and bottles all over the place. Shocking!! I used to have one, but lost it in a bitter custody battle. I convinced "he who shall not be named" to get one, but he paid for it, so it was his ... and I never got a claim on that one either.

Note to self ... you're an independent woman ... go buy your own!! Hehe ...

But you can forget FeliFer, now THIS is a match made in heaven ...

FeliWatch ..

OK ... maybe I like the coy look, Feli. But I am still devastated by the hair ...

Rafa practices hard today with Daveed ...

He did eventually remember to put his shirt on ... but here's some good footage of Rafa practising from Facebook.

Remember how ...

... the RFET asked all us fans of the Armada to "Decorate the Team's Clothing with Love"??

Hehe ... well, it was a bit of a loose translation, but the idea is put all the messages of support around the dressing rooms to cheer the boys on. Well, RFET have made a video of a number of the messages that were sent in, and its a great motivator to get us in the mood for the weekend.

One or two of you may recognise some faces amongst this lot ... ;) Here's the link ...

The Spanish Team's Pre-Draw Presser ...

After the high jinks of the radio interview, today the Spanish boys got down to business in the ipress conference. Most questions were directed to Rafa, but here are some soundbites from the team ...
Rafa: "We always play for Spain all around the world, but in DavisCup we do it as a team."

Feliciano Lopez about the doubles defeat in the semis: "We will learn from our mistakes, we have prepared the doubles better this time"

Fernando Verdasco also about the doubles defeat: "What happened in Cordoba must no happen again"
Some more words from the Spanish team ...
“It’s a pleasure playing in front of my crowd, in front of the Spanish people,” said Nadal. “Always the feeling is very special when that happens. We’re all very excited and we’ll try to play our best and win.”

Nadal has every reason to be confident. The Spanish team swept aside Belgium, USA and France en route to the Final and now, playing on clay at the Olympic Stadium in Seville, benefit from home advantage against Argentina.

“I think maybe we are a bit the favourites, but we have to show it on the court,” said Spanish captain Albert Costa. “They are a very strong team and they play very good in Davis Cup, so it’s going to be tough for sure.”

“My colleagues did a fabulous job in 2008,” said Nadal. “Argentina had a lot of pressure on their shoulders then. They saw the opportunity but there was a lot of internal disagreement. Then they met my teammates. It’s the same pressure now, they still need to win. We’ve done it before so that makes us a bit calmer.”

Nadal has only ever lost one best-of-five-sets match on clay, against Robin Soderling in 2009, and is considered by many as the greatest clay-courter of all time, so the conditions inside the Olympic Stadium are tailor made for the six-time Roland Garros champion.

And if the invincibility of Nadal doesn’t make Argentina’s job difficult enough then Ferrer, the Spanish No. 2, is certainly no slouch on clay either. The world No. 5 is one of the most consistent players in the men’s game and comes into the Final with an impressive 16-4 win-loss record in Davis Cup play.

All the signs are pointing to a home win, but this is Davis Cup and anything can happen. If Argentina are looking for a chink in the Spanish armour then they will take solace from the fact that their opposition appear slightly jaded at the end of a long season.

Nadal and Ferrer both played at the ATP World Tour Finals in London last week and suffered two defeats each, while the Argentines have been putting their full concentration into this Final.

“We’re all tired, physically tired, but this is a Final so it’s the last push,” said Ferrer. “We want to get this victory. We want to do it at all tournaments, but for us this is very important.”

“We’ve learned from our mistakes,” said Lopez. “In Cordoba (in the semifinals) things didn’t work out as we wanted, but we’ve trained in Barcelona this week and prepared differently to in the past. We’ve been practicing a lot especially to get this win.”
You can read more here at this link to the Davis Cup website.

You can see a TVE video of the presser at this link.

The round of interviews begin ...

The first one though was something rather informal as the Armada boys were interviewed on local radio.

Yes they discussed the up-and-coming final, but it was more talking about football, and who Feli thought was the most attractive of the female tennis players. ;)

OK ... he said Maria Kirilenko ... and it was some kid who asked him, not some envy enraged female. Hehe.

Here's a link to the Facebook page of all the photos cos they're sure to bring a smile to your face.

But the best thing for me is that they just look so relaxed and so happy in each other's company. Surely that is something that must mean a lot for Rafa and be good for him at the end of a tough season.

VAMOS!!

Hola Chicos!

Its just a boy fest this Davis Cup final, isn't it?

Rafa re-acquaints himself with "feel-good" buddy Marc! ... and how do the boys spend their after practice hours?

Why on the PlayStation, of course!!

Rafa gets onto the clay to practice ...

FerWatch ...

Fer continues to practice and these are probably pictures from the other day, but we can still see Fer having his back stretched out, so I do believe there's a bit of a problem with it.

And whilst Rafa and Daveed were slugging it out at the WTF, Feli and Fer arrived early to join coach Albert Costa, and here's a bit of video footage ... with Fer successfully continuing to pedal on his bike whilst being interviewed and Feli looking beautiful and talking all at the same time ...

Who said men can't multi-task ?? ;)

Lets prepare for La Copa Davis ...

Its starting to hot up now, all the players have arrived, we've had lots of latino bon-homie, ass squeezing, hugs and football tennis.

But now its down to business in Sevilla as the players start to ramp up their training.

Buena Suerte Espana!! and VAMOS!!

DC Final preview ...

This is a lovely video to get us all in the mood for the friendliest (?) Davis Cup final at the weekend.

And obviously filmed before Feli cut his blinkin' hair!!

FerWatch ...

Oh-My-God ... what's going on here? Does Fer have a back injury??

Best keep an eye on this. The thing is, with the kind of form Fer's been in of late, would it be such a bad thing if Marcel Granollers is called into the fray?? Anyhow, we'll have to see how all this develops.

FeliWatch ...

And so the Spanish-Argentine bromances continue as Feli and Delpo take hands and form a lovely frame as Delpo takes his partner for a bit of tango around the clay court.

But seriously ... what the hell is going on with Feli's hair??? Can anyone work it out?? Is it ... gulp ... A MULLET!??!!??

Pico ... oh my god I love you.

We've all been on that Rafarollercoaster this week. And I think we've all broke our heart over Rafa. But to see these pictures of him and one of his best friends, Pico Monaco, with Rafa greeting him as only boys do *roll* with a playful squeeze of the ass, well ... it warmed the cockles of my heart.

You've brought that wonderful, wide, crinkly smile back to Rafa's face, Pico, and for that ... I thank you. No actually, I love you ...

I have to say that I'm a bit concerned that Rafa seems to be practising OUR disco moves with Pico ... but I'll let him off.

Here's a bit of video action of the pair today ...

Rafa arrives in Seville ...

Putting food poisoning and the disappointment of the World Tour Finals aside, Rafa arrived in Seville today to join his Armada team-mates and prepare for next weekend's Davis Cup final.

No rest for the wicked, eh? You don't know what a schedule like this is, do you Feds?

And it seems he spent no time messing about as he donned that WTF grey kit and hit the practice courts. A quick change later, and there he was again with Marcel Granollers who is acting as the reserve.

I'm also thrilled that his cheery mascot pal, Marc! is also there amongst the team as general cheer-leader and all-round lovely guy. Lets hope the DC proves to be the tonic that Rafa needs ...

FeliFerWatch ...

The boys are probably the weakest link in the Spanish team and Fer for one, is probably lucky to be holding on to his place.

He seems to be practising talking tactics behind his hand and Feli has already got that *doh* look about him. I mean ... they would win hands down for the most gorgeous doubles pairing, but sadly the DC isn't about that. Hehe ...
