This time 12 months ago ...
How many times do you say that phrase to yourself? I try most times not to look back, but forward ... however, looking back sometimes reminds you of those great times you had. And for me on this Davis Cup weekend, I am remembering 12 months ago because on this day last year, I was in the heat of Cordoba watching the Spanish Armada take on France in the Davis Cup semi-final.
Rafa had only finished his gruelling US Open final on the Monday, and yet there he was again on the clay a few days later giving a true Master Class to the French as he wiped them off the court. I remember it being a complete pain to get the tickets for the semi-final - we ended up buying them from a ticket agency at grossly inflated prices - and our "seat" was nothing but a concrete block. Its a good job I have plenty of natural padding. ;) But we fell over ourselves to get those tickets and have that experience because that was a special Armada team ... Rafa, David, Feli and Fer. Of course FeliFer left a lot to be desired on the tennis front, but they were pretty to look at.
Happy, happy times.
And all of us girls met up in the local square in the evening and toasted the team with cocktails and just had the best of times. Rafan and I experienced the Flamenco ... I took hundreds of pictures of Moorish arches, she took pictures of mangy dogs and moth-eaten birds. ;) It was all fab.
A very different team now represent Spain, now under the leadership of Alex Corretja. They're still strong, nonetheless, and are facing the USA in this weekend's semi-final. There still appears to be as much comaraderie amongst the team as there ever was ... even if, perhaps, they are missing their main cheer-leader.
So good luck to David, Nico, Marcel and Marc! And I hope for whoever goes this weekend, they have as good memories as we do from 12 months ago.
VAMOS ESPANA!!
