I'm so pleased to hear this news. Who could possibly forget those heart aching scenes as Rafa's friend - Pau Gasol - held him tight and kissed the top of his head after Rafa sought him out upon winning the French Open in June.
Here's Pau's announcement on Twitter ...
Very happy to be the carrier of the Spanish flag. One of the happiest moments of my career. Thanks Federations and COE! youtu.be/RRA6sAl0EVU

And of course, a suitable response was provided by Rafa ...
Congratulations @paugasol I'm so glad you're the standard-bearer! a reference and a example! A big hug and enjoy the moment! You deserve it!

Awwwww ... *wipes tear*
If any good has come out of the sad news of Rafa's withdrawal from the Olympic Games, its that his close friends have gained some benefit. Pau will carry the flag for Spain, and Marc! Lopez has been drafted into the Armada tennis team. I'm sure that Rafa will live the Games through them, and that's why I'm so glad that Spain has chosen people so close to him. I am positively convinced that Rafa, being as good a person as he is, will be absolutely delighted for them to have this opportunity.
Pau has been so steadfast a friend, and is such an excellent athlete. I am happy for him.
ReplyDeleteHis embrace of Rafa was so moving -- I shall never forget it. It said everything, about the brotherhood of sport, about friendship, about striving ... about that moment for Rafa.
