No reprieve on Birthday eve ...

Well I won't be using words like "vintage" to describe this performance, but it was a 3-set victory and Rafa's through to the second week.

Job done.

He absolutely raced ahead in the first set against Eduardo Schwank, and it felt at times like it would be a bagel. But Schwank steadied himself and just hit very hard, but it was effective. Rafa didn't have any true rhythm in his play, but still was able to pull out the odd mind blowing shot here and there. A break in each of the second and third sets gave him the match by a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 scoreline. It was a solid performance, and I'll take solid so long as he progresses.

A funny moment happened at the end of match with the ceremonial throwing of the sweat bands. He threw the second one like a girl and from too far back, so he was able to run after it and catch it himself. Cue a massive smile from Rafa. Awwwww ...

But would you ever believe what I'm about to tell you? At the end of the match, my broadcasters moved to the studio and other matches, but I caught this on Twitter and before Rafa left the court, the French crowd broke out into a chorus of "Happy Birthday" for him. Awesome! I can't wait to see the footage and Rafa's reaction, and I'm sure it will find its way on YouTube at some point.

And here's a thought. Rafan was there at the start of the week and reported on what a great reception Rafa had. The practice courts are packed to see him play, as are the show courts themselves. And do you know what? For all the mischief meddling that "Les Guignols" have tried to aim at Rafa and the dreadful publicity surrounding it, well I think it may well have prompted a swell of actual sympathy towards him from, and an embarrassment at how the French attitude towards him is perceived world-wide.

So "Guignols" ... you're all for having a laugh at someone else's expense, aren't you. Well, the last laugh might well be on YOU!

Rafa plays his great friend Juan Monaco in the next round who defeated Milos Raonic in 5 sets. Vamos!
