Rafa withdraws from Paris-Bercy ...

Notwithstanding that its obviously disappointing for Rafa fans that he's decided to withdraw, I personally think its the best thing for him and a great way to "manage" his schedule.

The writing was on the wall when in Asia, Rafa spoke of his future tournaments and significantly didn't mention Paris. Although this was rectified in his final post-match presser from Shanghai, I'm not at all surprised by this decision.

Due to some fantastic research by Nou on VB, it seems that Rafa has actually met the criteria THIS year for being able to opt out of one of the mandatory Masters 1000s. He has to have played 600 matches following the 1st January of the commitment year to qualify from dropping a tournament, and by some quirk of the ruling, Rafa's futures and challengers also count to this total. So he can withdraw without penalty.

This is what Rafa had to say on Facebook ...
"Hi all. I won't be playing this upcoming week the tournament in Paris Bercy. It's been a difficult decision to take but I understand that it is what I need to do right now to prepare well for the end of this season and also for 2012. I hope I can be back in 2012 to that great event in the most beautiful city in the world, and hopefully try to win it once day."
The best thing for me is that whilst I may have had a laugh about it, Rafa isn't citing any "nagging" injuries. It seems that he is fit and healthy and at this stage of the season, that is terrific news. The WTF and of course, the Davis Cup final, are so much more important for him to prepare for, rather than some indoor tournament on a fast hardcourt that doesn't suit him, in front of a crowd that simply don't deserve him.

Wishing you well, Rafa. A good decision, and here's hoping you are working hard to find a way ...
