Rafa will play Madrid ... probably

As reported previously, speculation has been rife as to whether Rafa will participate in the brand new Madrid Masters starting Monday. Rafa's website tantalisingly suggests (without definitively saying) that he WILL be in Madrid, but cites his off-court itinerary there without mention of direct involvement:-

"It is thanks to the dedication and hard work delivered by the champion that he can now enjoy a much deserved break (in the company of his family and friends) before he travels to Madrid on Thursday morning. During his stay in Madrid, these are some of the things Rafa will be doing:

Thursday: Nike promotional event
Friday: Launch of a new BANESTO’s campaign
Saturday: First official Madrid Masters Series press conference for the world media."

I'd like to leave a provocative thought ... the release talks about his "stay in Madrid" and discusses the things he will be doing such as promotional events with attendance at the tournament's press conference, but yet fails to mention practice or even playing. Am I correct in thinking that should a player cite "circumstances" yet attend the tournament in a promotional capacity, he's allowed to withdraw without fear of penalty or reprisal? Could Rafa actually attend Madrid, yet not play? Regardless of the answer to this question ... here's hoping that it will - at least - be the final appearance of that hideous egg yolk and peppermint combo!!
