Nadal succeeds Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the stripped down role a decision which is being seen as a bold move in a sector of the fashion industry worth more than £6bn annually.

Nadal’s move from top drawer star to bottom drawer fashion icon follows a tried and tested advertising formula. Sales of Armani’s tight white briefs rose by 10% in Britain following a similar campaign fronted by Beckham.

Those that way inclined must wait till early in the New Year to spy the first snaps of Nadal (and not much else).
